Waiting for Godstone

Beautiful churches and picture postcard villages; views, quarries and lakes

#countrysidewalks #villagestodiscover #historicsites

Length: 10 miles (16.2km)

Hills: ↑ 846 feet

  • Parking: Free, 24hr at start - Bletchingley Village High Street

Alternatives: Tilburstow Hill Car Park (mile 6.5) is free. It’s the highest point on the walk, so if you start there, you end with a big hill. Parking is limited in Godstone Village (mile 3.5). The marked car parks are restricted to 3 hour stays.

  • Public Transport: Tricky. Nearest station is Godstone, but it’s 1.3 miles from the nearest point of the route (mile 6). There are local buses from Oxted or Redhill.

  • Bletchingley (at the start/end) and Godstone (mile 3.75) are both well served for pubs, cafés and shops, we’ve mentioned some favourites below. Beyond Godstone there is nothing, unless you detour about 600 yards down to the Fox & Hounds (just past mile 6).

    The Red Lion, Bletchingley, RH1 4NU (Start/End)

Lively, buzzy pub with an epic menu with a touch of Greek/mezze influence alongside pub classics. Terrace at the front and cute ‘secret’ garden at the back.

    Lamingtons, Bletchingley, RH1 4PB (Start/End)

Really beautiful cafe with mouthwatering cakes and bakes to eat in or takeaway. Worth stopping in for picnic extras if you can.

Hare + Hounds, Godstone Village Green, RH9 8LN (mile 3.75)

Probably the most affordable of the pubs in this village with nice food, friendly service and a traditional feel. Dogs welcome.

    Fox & Hounds, South Godstone, RH9 8LY (mile 6.1)

Blissfully not a chain pub, with a lovely individual vibe, great beer and great food. Dogs welcome in the bar area. It’s a small detour to get here (worth it though). As you come out of the woods onto Tilburstow Hill Road, turn south (left). It’s a fast A road with no pavement for the first 100 yards, so rather than walk along it, stay just east of the belt of trees and come out by the first driveway south of the footpath, where the pavement begins.

  • Start/finish: The Village Stores in Bletchinley.

Mile 3.75: Londis and Coughlans Bakery in Godstone

“It was still too early in the year to be starting a 10-miler at 1pm, but we headed off anyway, and the treat was one of the most spectacular sunsets I’ve ever seen. The world turned gold, then the sky shot peptobismol pink and by the time we arrived at the back in Bletchingley the church, festooned with fairy lights, was twinkling in the gloaming.”
